White Elm is a Petting Farm in Bicknacre to the south east of Chelmsford City. As well as animals it has an outdoor playground and a soft play. It is located at White Elm Garden Centre.
The Petting Farm at White Elm
They have a variety of animals at White Elm including, goats, alpacas, pigs, sheep, deer, ducks, miniature pony, chicken. They also have pet type animals like rabbits and guinea PSG. My favourites animals when we visited were the Rheas, a kind of large bird. They also have wallabies which are great fun to watch. In the summer they also host visits from the Essex Reptile Centre and Kings Falconry.
As you would expect at a farm, there is plenty of mud so don’t forget your wellies.
The Play Barn
The play barn houses the soft play frame and the snack shack. There are a god number of chairs and tables for adults to sit while the children are in the soft play or playing with the toys. The soft play int particularly big but it’s clean and will appeal to younger children. The barn is long and narrow so if you have children who need close supervision on the soft play you’ll need to try and get a seat at that end.
The Outside Play Area
There is a nice outside play area at White Elm with a variety of swings, slides and climbing structures. The biggest hit for my kids were the sand pits. They enjoyed both building sand castles and operating the mini diggers that are in them. They also have pedal tractors for the kids to ride on.
Eating at White Elm
When we visited White Elm we ate at the Snack Shack in the play barn. The kids chose lunch bags we include a variety of small items and I always find these work well with my kids. I had a toasted sandwich which was very nice. It was busy but we didn’t have to wait a very long time.
White Elm also has a tea rooms as part of the garden centre so you can eat there if you prefer to avoid the play barn. The tea rooms offers light meals, children’s meals, a variety of cakes and amazing breakfasts. Children are welcome but it also has an adult only area.
Other Features at White Elm
White Elm stared life as a garden centre and that’s still very much in operation. In addition to the usual garden centre items, they do a good range of seasonal items. They also have there own mini shopping village based in cabins where boutique retailers sell their goods. A great way to support small businesses.
