Paradise Road Play Area Writtle

Paradise Road Park is in Writtle, at the end of Paradise Road. It is run by Writtle Parish Council so doesn’t appear on the Chelmsford City Council website’s list of parks.

The playground was refurbished in 2014 and is great if you have both a young child and an older child because there is play equipment to appeal to both. It’s a fenced area with good sight lines so you can easily keep an eye on multiple children. You can also walk easily from Paradise Road Play Area to Hylands Park by turning left when you leave the car park.

The Play Equipment

For younger children, there are baby swings, a roundabout and a little train to pretend to drive.

The main play structure for smaller children includes a slide, a steering wheel (which is the reason my children always referee to Paradise Road Park as “The Steering Wheel Park” and an area that can be used to role play a shop of a kitchen.

For the older children, there is a zip wire, a climbing wall, monkey bars, a slide and swings (including a basket swing). It also has some more unusual pieces of equipment, including a kind of surf board and a swing you stand up that is a bit like skateboarding. My children’s favourite feature of the Paradise Road Play area by far is the hill, which they love to run up and down and jump off of.

The Playground has a rubber surface over the whole area so isn’t muddy in winter or too unpleasant to fall over on. There are no toilets nearby.

Other Facilities

There is a large playing field next to the playground which has a basketball hoop and a football goal. On the other side of the playing field there is a small skatepark which is usually quieter than the one in Central Park so can be less intimidating for younger children. Unfortunately there is no path to it so in the winter you have to carry your scooters/skateboards across the mud.

The play area has a large, free car park but at the weekends it can get busy because of the football matches that are played on the field.
