Chelmer Park is in Galleywood, with entrances from Beehive Lane, Osprey Way (in Tile Kiln) and Slades Lane. It is a Chelmsford City Council run park.
Chelmer Park has two playgrounds, one for younger children and one for older children. This can make it tricky if you have mixed ages because there is no sight line between the two playgrounds due to the trees.
The Play Equipment
The younger children’s playground at Chelmer Park has a small climbing frame with a slide and some baby swings. It’s aimed at very young children, toddlers primarily although some preschoolers may still enjoy it. The playground is very shaded because of the trees on two sides which unfortunately also mean there is a lot of bird mess on the equipment, all of which is looking a bit tired. If you’re looking for a good park for toddlers in the area, check out Baddow Recreation Ground.
The playground for older children has a large climbing structure that includes slides, a climbing wall and various things to balance on. There are some springers, some things for making music and two swings.
Chelmer park has two features that children love. One is the two giant slides that are set into the hill at the back of the park. The other is the carousel which is a large pole with three seats hanging from ropes. You wind it round and it then spins back. It’s great fun but is unfortunately often out of action.
Both playgrounds have a mix of rubber surface under equipment, concrete areas and grass areas.
Other Features at Chelmer Park
Just outside of the older children’s playground there are some small hills which kids love running up and down. They are also excellent for sledging when it snows.
The park also has some small wooded areas as well as grass areas and picnic benches. Behind the playground is a community orchard which is lovely to walk through. There are a lot of sports facilities at the park including grass football and crickets pitches, 3G pitches and tennis courts. There is also an outdoor gym in the park and a table tennis table, both are near the car park.
There are toilets on the Beehive lane side of Chelmer park where the sports facilities are located. There is a large, free car park accessed from Beehive Lane. It does get busy when football matches are on but there is an over flow area that means you can usually still get a space.
The postcode for the Car Park on a Beehive Lane is CM2 8RL. You can find more details on the Council’s website.
